Biography
Dr. Jun Zhang is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. He was an intern at AT&T Labs in the summer of 2007 and 2008, working on MIMO techniques in WiMAX and 3GPP-LTE systems. Dr. Zhang is co-author of the book “Fundamentals of LTE” (Prentice-Hall, 2010). His research interests are in wireless communications and networking, and green communications. He has served on TPCs of different international conferences including IEEE ICC, VTC, Globecom, WCNC, PIMRC, etc. He served as a MAC track co-chair for IEEE WCNC 2011.
Abstract
Energy harvesting (EH) has been recently proposed as a promising technology to enable green communications. By harvesting energy from the environment, communication nodes with the EH capability can improve the energy efficiency and extend the lifetime of wireless networks. To provide satisfactory performance, new communication protocols will be needed for EH communication networks. A major design challenge is due to the energy causality constraint, which means only the previously harvested energy can be used in the current transmission block. In this talk, we will introduce some recent results on the design of cooperative communication protocols for EH communication networks, which can be served as a key technique to improve the communication performance. Specifically, the following three topics will be presented: 1) Optimizing two-hop EH communication systems; 2) relay selection for cooperative EH networks; and 3) QoS provisioning in EH communication networks with multiple relays.
