ISEE Scholars Won 2021 Advanced Photonics Editor-in-Chief Choice Awards

Date:2022-06-01

Recently, Advanced Photonics presented its 2021 Editor-in-Chief Choice Awards for the best papers. Two articles were selected by the journal's co-editor-in-chiefs, one of which is an original research article by Prof. CHEN Hongsheng’s team.

The article entitled “Ultra-wideband Chromatic Aberration-Free Meta-Mirrors” makes a breakthrough in free regulation of dispersion based on multi-mode resonant metasurfaces, and proposes a general and systematic design scheme of electromagnetic control devices with high efficiency and wideband properties.

In recent years, the bandwidth of circularly polarized achromatic devices (lenses, deflectors, etc.) based on Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) metasurfaces has been continuously expanded. However, due to the complexity of dispersion regulation of linearly polarized metasurfaces and the strict high-efficiency working conditions of PB metasurfaces, it is difficult to simultaneously integrate high efficiency and broadband properties for these electromagnetic-tuning devices (Figs. 1(a)-(b)). shown). In this paper, the free regulation of frequency dispersion is realized by effectively controlling the resonance strength, resonance frequency and number of resonances of the multi-resonance model. Taking the meta-mirror as an example, two kinds of microwave meta-mirrors are designed/fabricated with very high efficiencies in frequency interval of 8-12 GHz (in the range of 85%-94%). One is the achromatic meta-mirror, as shown in Fig. 1(c), which can achieve the same deflection angle at different frequencies. The other one is the abnormal chromatic meta-mirror, as shown in Fig. 1(d), which can deflect the incident waves as a linear function of frequency.

Broadband response of metasurfaces is crucial for many applications throughout the electromagnetic spectrum and is difficult to achieve without associated aberrations,” noted by Anatoly Zayats, Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Photonics. “In this paper, the authors propose a fascinating approach to overcome this important limitation in the microwave regime. The results provide food for thought and interesting recipes for scientists working in other spectral ranges for designing broadband performance of their metasurfaces.

"It is a great honor to receive the 2021 Advanced Photonics Editor-in-Chief Choice Awards. We are delighted that our paper has received wide attention, downloads and citations on the Advanced Photonics magazine platform. I think this honor belongs not only to all authors of this article, but to the Meta research team of ZJU. Our team has been devoted to the research on the principle, design and application of metasurfaces and metastructure devices, and has made significant progress in the design of ultra-broadband high-efficiency chromatic aberration control meta-mirrors. It will provide a solid platform for high-efficiency regulation of broadband electromagnetic waves and will further stimulate the development and application of broadband metasurface devices. Thanks to the Editor-in-Chief, editors and reviewers for their affirmation of this article and wish Advanced Photonics journal to a higher level and become the cradle of high-level academic papers.”
